The stethoscope is part of the basic diagnostic equipment of every doctor for listening to body sounds such as heart sounds or flow noises. Stethoscopes are diagnostic instruments that can be used very flexibly. Another common use for simple stethoscopes is blood pressure measurement with a manual sphygmomanometer. The 3M Littmann stethoscopes, which are characterized by excellent acoustics and high processing quality, are particularly popular.

Construction of the stethoscope

How exactly does a stethoscope work? Some models have a single-sided chestpiece with an adjustable diaphragm. Others have a two-sided chestpiece with a diaphragm on one side and a funnel on the other. On some models the funnels are always open, on others they are closed with an adjustable diaphragm.
The larger membrane side is typically used for adult patients. The small-diameter funnel is best for children and thin patients, for bandages, and for carotid artery examination. The closed bell of a stethoscope can be converted to a traditional open bell by replacing the diaphragm with a non-chill ring.
The tubing connector connects the stethoscope tubing to the chestpiece. In the models with two-sided chestpieces, there can only be one acoustic path from the diaphragm to the eartips. By turning the chest piece on the hose connection, one selects or "indicates" which membrane is open to the acoustic path.
Hose
The current Littmann stethoscopes have the latest generation of tubes with improved resistance to skin oils and alcohol. This ensures a longer service life for the stethoscope and its parts. To protect people and the environment, the hose material does not contain any natural rubber latex or phthalate plasticizers. All cardiology stethoscopes use the double tube system: two sound paths within an outer tube. This eliminates the rubbing noise associated with traditional dual-tube stethoscopes.

The earhooks consist of two tubes with tension springs and eartips.
To ensure a snug fit in your ear canals, the ear hooks are oriented at an anatomically correct angle. The knurled ends of the temples ensure a firm and secure fit of the eartips. The ear hooks of Littmann stethoscopes are made of an aluminum alloy that is also used in aircraft construction, which is light and yet stable.
The pressure of the ear hooks can be adjusted to ensure a good fit and a comfortable fit. Spread the straps apart to reduce pressure or squeeze them together (cross the straps) to increase pressure.
